SA IMET
Welcome!
Support for medical education in South Australia is receiving a substantial boost through the creation of the South Australian Institute of Medical Education and Training (SA IMET). SA IMET will extend the support of its predecessor, the Postgraduate Medical Council of South Australia (PMCSA), for prevocational doctors with accreditation of PGY2+ positions in 2010, and strong advocacy and support for the continuity of medical training, especially through the vocational years.
SA IMET is independent in its reporting structure and so is able to represent supervisors, trainees and education in general, advising and interacting with SA Department of Health to achieve strong outcomes. Support processes will be broad and include frameworks for effective education programs such as teaching on the run, professional development for registrars and other education initiatives, national and local advocacy including especially JMO forums, allocation processes for interns and prevocational training posts, consideration of the development of networks and other supports for specialty training and support for international medical graduates entering our workforce.
SA IMET takes its advice from extensive consultation and we encourage the entire medical community to contribute to and interact with SA IMET as it develops medical education and training in South Australia. It promises to be both an exciting and challenging time!

*NEW* Trainee in Difficulty: a handbook for Directors of Clinical Training
SA IMET has recently produced Trainee in Difficulty: a handbook for Directors of Clinical Training. This handbook is an adaptation of the NSW IMET "Trainee in Difficulty: a handbook for Directors of Prevocational Education and Training".
This practical handbook gives advice on managing postgraduate trainees who are experiencing difficulties.
Please visit the Trainee in Difficulty web page for further information and to access to the handbook
*NEW* SA IMET Unit Accreditation Application!
The SA IMET Unit Accreditation Application has been developed for facilities to use when applying for accreditation of a New Unit.
This form should be returned to SA IMET no later than 60 days prior to the date requested for the Survey Visit.
When applying for accreditation, facilities should allow sufficient time for required approval processes. Medical Board approval is required prior to an Intern being placed in any unit. Medical Board processes can be lengthy, typically 2-3 months after SA IMET processes are complete.
Visit the SA IMET Accreditation Standards webpage for further information and to access the Standards.
