PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR REGISTRARS (PDPR)

SA Update

Medical registrars are currently given little guidance or education on how to assume the leadership responsibilities of their increasingly senior position and many can struggle with some of the assumed expectations. This program seeks to address this deficiency. In particular it offers information on leadership styles, conflict resolution, giving feedback, time management among other things as well as providing a Myers Briggs personality indicator for self awareness.

This important leadership program continues to be rolled out to registrars across SA. The most recent program was held over two days in June, with sixteen participants. The course evaluation forms show the value registrars place on this program and the topics that are covered.

Dr Alison Jones has recently joined SA IMET and will be working on the continued development and running of this program, with support from others. She recently attended the Trainer Accreditation Program in Victoria and is looking forward to working with other accredited trainers across SA.

If you are a registrar and would like to take part in one of the two day programs in the future, please email saimet@health.sa.gov.au to let us know.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank those trainers who have already assisted us with facilitating programs. If there are others who are keen to become accredited, please email us (saimet@health.sa.gov.au) and we can add you to the database of trainers.

And finally, thanks to all those who have participated in the program so far and made it such a success. It appears that they have gained valuable skills in topics relating to leadership, teaching and supervision, and quality and safety. As a recent participant noted 'An eye opener and very useful in facing daily challenges'.
